Free Online 25-Hour Course The New EU Asylum Pact

The Jean Monnet Chair “EU Law, Values and Digital Citizenship” at the Department of International and European Studies of the University of Macedonia is pleased to announce the organisation of the free online Course “The New EU Asylum Pact”, a contemporary and interdisciplinary 25-hour educational programme designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the New EU Pact on Migration and Asylum, its legal framework, its implementation mechanisms and its implications for the Common European Asylum System and European migration governance, as well as give insights from 3 frontline member states, Greece, Italy and Spain.
The course will be delivered online via Zoom from Monday, 6 July to Thursday, 9 July 2026. Sessions will run daily from 16:00 to 21:00, with the exception of Thursday, when the programme begins at 15:00.
The Course is organised within the framework of the Jean Monnet Chair with the support of the UNESCO Chair “Intercultural Policy for an Active Citizenship and Solidarity” at the University of Macedonia and the Master’s program in Human Rights and Migration Studies (HURMIS) of the University of Macedonia.
The programme contributes to the ongoing academic discussion on the development of the Common European Asylum System, focusing on the legal and institutional framework governing migration and asylum within the European Union. Particular emphasis is placed on the implementation of the New EU Pact on Migration and Asylum, solidarity among Member States, border management, the protection of fundamental rights and current challenges in European migration governance.
Throughout the course, participants will examine the legal architecture of the New EU Pact on Migration and Asylum, with particular emphasis on its principal legislative instruments, including the Screening Regulation, the Asylum and Migration Management Regulation (AMMR), the Asylum Procedures Regulation, the Border Return Procedure Regulation, the Reception Conditions Regulation, and the Crisis and Force Majeure Regulation. The programme also addresses key issues such as border controls, solidarity mechanisms, border procedures, return policies, safe third countries, migration partnerships, criminal law aspects of migration, European security, and the protection of fundamental rights.
Combining academic lectures, legislative analysis, case studies and policy discussions, the programme brings together distinguished academics and experienced practitioners with recognised expertise in European asylum and migration law.

Target Audience
The programme is designed for students, researchers, academics, legal practitioners, judges, lawyers, public administration officials, policymakers, migration and asylum professionals, members of civil society organisations, and all those interested in European Union asylum and migration law and policy.
Lecturers
Lecturers are professors from the University of Macedonia, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Hellenic Mediterranean University in Crete, the Hellenic Open University and the Deusto University in Spain as well as lawyers from Greece and Italy.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:
- understand the legal framework of the New EU Pact on Migration and Asylum;
- analyse the principal legislative instruments of the new Common European Asylum System;
- evaluate the relationship between migration management, solidarity among Member States and the protection of fundamental rights;
- critically assess current legal and policy challenges relating to asylum procedures, border management and return policies;
- understand the role of European agencies and international cooperation in migration governance;
- apply the acquired knowledge to contemporary developments in European Union asylum and migration law.
With this course, the Jean Monnet Chair aims to provide participants with an in-depth understanding of the evolving European asylum and migration framework, enabling them to critically evaluate recent legislative developments and policy challenges while strengthening their academic and professional expertise in European Union asylum and migration law.
Participation in the Summer Course is offered at no cost to participants, as all programme expenses are funded by the Erasmus+ Programme (Jean Monnet Action).
Certificates of Completion will be awarded to participants who attend at least 20 of the 25 course hours, with their cameras switched on throughout the online sessions. The other participants will obtain a certificate of attendance
